At last greenpete.org is back online and hosted on a Linux server!
This site is hosted at home on an old Dell Optiplex GX1, a very old and low power machine.
But it runs a mail server four web sites including a chat room, an RSS feed aggregator, a book marking system, a torrent tracker and torrent client!
I had run a web and mail server up until now on a Windblows XP Pro box, but really wanted to get away from not only Microshaft but closed software.
Not only is all the software running this server free, but is ‘open’, giving me complete control over the system.
This helps in the learning process as I CAN play around with the code in this system, unlike in M.S.
Another reason for running my own server is that privacy is becoming more and more compromised.
I really don’t like the thought that some huge faceless corporation has all my personal data on their servers and can do what they want with it!
Here I can and do run my own mail and chat software, the latter my main sites host doesn’t allow.
They also wont let me run my own torrent tracker to track my own work! So that is something else I can do here.
Like I say, “Host Your Self.. Another Step towards Freedom”!
